The Revenant is a 2015 American epic period piece directed, co-produced, and co-written by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The movie tells the story of frontiersman Hugh Glass, who becomes the target of revenge from a bear that attacks him in the Rocky Mountains in 1823. Although badly wounded and barely alive, he begins to crawl to safety when he encounters Pawnee Indian chief Takatawe near his campfire. Glass is convinced by the chief to journey to the Pawnee village where he finds his son alive. There are also subplots involving a variety of other characters. Filming began on August 19, 2014, in Alberta, Canada.The movie opened the 72nd Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2015 and was released in the United States on December 25, 2015. The Revenant received praise from critics for its screenplay and performances of DiCaprio and Hardy as well as Iñárritu' direction. It became Iñárritu's second consecutive film to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Director – Motion Picture, after winning for Birdman at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards. The Revenant received twelve nominations at the 88th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for DiCaprio, Best Supporting Actor for Hardy, and Best Director for Iñárritu. It won three awards: Best Director (Iñárritu), Best Supporting Actor (Hardy) and Best Cinematography (Lubezki).In 1823, Hugh Glass guides Andrew Henry’s trappers through unorganized territory. While he and his half-Pawnee son Hawk are hunting, the company’s camp is attacked by an Arikara war party. Glass recommends that the survivors travel to Fort Kiowa as traveling downriver will make them vulnerable. While on the river, the trappers are harassed by a band of thieves led by John Fitzgerald. The expedition hires two Native Americans as guides – Jim Bridger, a Ute, and Fitzgerald’s half-Pawnee son-in-law Hawk. Placing their faith in Hawk to lead them, Glass and Bridger travel downriver with eight settlers. Fitzgerald leads his men into Fort Kiowa where he is accepted as an elder of the tribe after killing an Arikara chief. He imprisons Glass’ son at gunpoint but releases him the next day. Bridger falls ill from having eaten pemmican laced with mercury. Hawk leads Glass and the trappers to winter in the mountains. Fitzgerald, who believes he has ruined Hawk’s life, accepts defeat and leads his own group of settlers to Fort Kiowa. After the spring thaw, Jackson "Jacks" Kesler kills his companions Miller and Dawkins, claiming they were Arikara spies. Glass confronts Jackson about Miller and Dawkins’ murders but is held at gunpoint by Jackson who wants credit for solving the Arikara threat. Fitzgerald shoots Kesler dead for endangering Hawk. Unable to persuade Jackson to accompany him into town in order to receive medical treatment, Glass leaves with Hawk after stealing a horse from Fitzgerald.
